FL-25 David Rivera (R) in the headlines again

The David Rivera we’ve come to enjoy as a Republican contender for the US House is in the news again, the Miami Herald, other outlets around the state, and even in Europe now as an example of Florida’s seamy politics. The Spanish are – What, amused, amazed, aghast? – at what they’re reading in El Mundo about this member of the Florida House of Representatives.

The Herald story wraps together the suspicion of domestic violence and the dirty-trickery expressway fender-bender that was on Channel 4. These two incidents date from 1994 and 2002, so they’re not exactly fresh news. It’s interesting, though, to note that they were eight years apart, and now in 2010 it’s eight years since the 2002 incident, so Rivera is about due for another whopper, right? Yes, on cue he popped up with a home foreclosure this year. And his partner in that financially dubious enterprise was none other than Marco Rubio, now the Tea Party (Republican) candidate for US Senate.

What’s wrong with this picture? Why can’t the Republican Party do better in Miami than to have such flawed candidates? We cast our gaze to the leadership of the Miami-Dade County Republicans, and, lo, the chairman is David Rivera.

Somehow, it all comes clear. This is the best they’ve got. And their justification (seen down in the comments) becomes clear: This is the candidate the people have voted for again and again, so it must be OK. But what about dirty politics? What about spending the earth to get elected to a low-paying office? What about those lying mailers?

Thanks to the Herald and Miami’s TV outlets for sticking their necks out on these stories. These are signs of better times to come.

And let us not forget: Joe Garcia for Congress!
